What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® is a prescription-only weight loss treatment containing tirzepatide — a medication designed to support effective weight reduction by helping control appetite and regulate blood sugar levels. When used alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity, it can significantly enhance weight loss results.

Originally developed and approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro® is now authorised by the MHRA in the UK for weight management in adults aged 18 and over.

Who is eligible for Mounjaro® in the UK?

Mounjaro® is available for adults aged 18–84 who meet at least one of the following criteria:

BMI of 30 or higher (classified as obesity)
BMI between 27 and 30 with a weight-related health condition, such as:

  • Prediabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Heart Disease

How Does Mounjaro® Work?

Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, which activates two appetite-regulating hormones:

🔹 GLP-1 – Helps reduce hunger & slow digestion.
🔹 GIP – Supports metabolism and enhances weight loss results.

By targeting the brain’s appetite control centres, Mounjaro® helps you feel full sooner and stay satisfied for longer. This means you can enjoy smaller portions without feeling deprived. The dual action of tirzepatide not only reduces calorie intake and promotes weight loss, but also improves insulin production, helping to lower blood sugar levels — an added benefit for people with diabetes.

Is Mounjaro® Effective for weight loss?

Clinical studies have shown that weekly doses of Mounjaro® can lead to significant weight loss over a 72-week period.

It has been clinically proven to be one of the most effective prescription weight loss treatments currently available.

How to Use Mounjaro® Injections

🔹 Injection Sites: Administer once a week into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm (upper arm injections may require assistance).
🔹 Rotate injection sites Switch locations weekly to help prevent skin irritation.

Mounjaro® Injection Dosage Schedule

Your Mounjaro® journey begins with a low starting dose that gradually increases over time. This helps your body adjust and ensures you reach the maintenance dose that works best for you — up to a maximum of 15mg.

What Happens If You Stop Taking Mounjaro®?

  • Possible weight regain: Stopping treatment may increase appetite, making it harder to maintain your weight loss.

  • Maintain healthy habits: Continuing your diet and exercise plan can help prevent weight from returning.

  • Side effects fade: Any treatment-related side effects should resolve within a few weeks after stopping.

What if I Miss a Dose of Mounjaro®?

  • Less than 96 hours (4 days) late → Take the missed dose as soon as possible.

  • More than 96 hours late → Skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.

  • Missed more than one dose → Speak to your doctor — you may need to restart at a lower dose.

How Long Should You Take Mounjaro®?

You can continue taking Mounjaro® for as long as it helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. If results plateau or the treatment becomes less effective, your clinician may recommend adjusting the dose or exploring alternative options.
